In Call, Abbas Tells Blinken Injustice Towards Palestinians Is Leading To ‘Explosion’

In a recent call between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Abbas warned that the ongoing injustice towards Palestinians is leading to a dangerous situation that could result in an “explosion.”

Abbas stressed the importance of the US playing a leading role in ending the Israeli occupation and establishing a just and lasting peace in the region. He also called on the US to pressure Israel to stop its illegal settlement activity and expansion in the occupied West Bank, which is undermining the prospects for a two-state solution.

Blinken reiterated the US commitment to a two-state solution and called for both sides to take steps to de-escalate tensions and build trust. However, he did not offer any concrete steps that the US would take to address the root causes of the conflict, such as the Israeli occupation and its violations of Palestinian rights.

The call between Abbas and Blinken comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region. Israeli forces have killed over 70 Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip since the beginning of the year, while Palestinian militants have carried out several attacks on Israeli targets.

The situation has been exacerbated by the Israeli government’s decision to expand its settlement activity in the occupied West Bank, which is a violation of international law. The settlements are also a major obstacle to peace, as they make it increasingly difficult to envision a two-state solution.

The US has long been a key mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, its role has been diminished in recent years due to its close ties to Israel and its failure to hold Israel accountable for its violations of Palestinian rights.

Abbas’ warning to Blinken is a clear sign of the growing frustration among Palestinians with the US failure to act to end the Israeli occupation. The US must take heed of Abbas’ warning and take concrete steps to address the root causes of the conflict, or it risks seeing the situation spiral out of control.
